In 2009, the Alpha Omega chapter held its first Building A Better Holiday philanthropy on November 20. The chapter wanted to achieve three goals when developing this new program. First, to create an event that not only the Greek community could rally around, but the entire Gainesville community. Second, to support a well established organization that would benefit the local community. Finally, to raise something tangible. From this, the idea of partnering with Build-A-Bear Workshop to benefit the Toys For Tots foundation was made. Members of the Greek and local community were given the chance to come build a bear that would then be donate to one of the over 3,000 children in the Gainesville community that would have gone without a gift this holiday season. The event was a success in raising over $10,000 that went to providing 877 bears and over $1,500 to the Toys For Tots foundation. The chapter believes that the possibilities of this event are exponential for the years to come in making this a staple event for Gainesville with Alpha Tau Omega at its center.
